Hydro-power in Portugal
A huge hydro-electric power plant 250 kms south-east of Lisbon in Portugal uses Alstom technology to combine and store wind and hydro energies. This plant has a capacity of 260 megawatts and supplies energy to 175,000 households. The reduction in CO2 emissions is the equivalent to removing 185,000 cars from the road. The upper reservoir is the biggest in Europe: 85 km long with a surface of 250 square kilometres.

Six autonomous modules balance a cubic structure
Have you ever seen a troupe of acrobats balancing in formation? How do they keep from falling over? Each member of the group balances their weight against the others, making many tiny adjustments each second.

The Balancing Cube can balance on any of its edges or corners. It owes this ability to six rotating mechanisms located on each inner face of the cube. When the mechanisms (simply called modules) are actuated,

Mouseless - an invisible computer mouse
Mouseless is a project by Pranav Mistry of the MIT Fluid Interfaces Group. He calls it an "invisible computer mouse" that creates the feeling of using a mouse without actually having a physical device. This is achieved via an infrared beam and sensor, which will help detect the hand's position. So all that's left for the user to do is move a cupped hand as if it were holding a mouse and the system will detect its movement and clicks.
This is a research project, so we won't get to try

Gmail isn't just about e-mail anymore: it's also a phone. Google launched the ability to make voice calls to any traditional phone number from a Gmail account Wednesday. It's a blend of Gmail and Google Voice technology that allows users to dial numbers from their computers as well as receive incoming calls through one's Google Voice number. Gmail users can link their Google Voice accounts with their Gmail accounts to have their in-boxes treated like just another line that will ring when p

Hexapod Robot Ready To Conquer Extreme Obstacles
Japan's Kondo Kagaku has a new spider robot with six legs and a palpable creep factor, especially when it drums on a table like in this video.  The KMR-M6 is targeted at hobbyists, researchers, and people who want to scare others. Each of its legs has two Kondo KRS-2552HV ICS servo motors--one for the horizontal rotation and another for the vertical movement. The bot seems to have a maximum ground clearance of about 4 inches. The Kondo RCB-4HV control board directs the leg movements, and a 10.8V
