In the United States, the song was released on January 20, 2009 as the album's fourth single. Halo won Best Song at the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards, and is currently nominated for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 52nd Grammy Awards.

The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 on the issue dated February 7, 2009, at number 93 and has peaked to #5, becoming Knowles' 12th Top 10 single on the Hot 100 as a solo artist.
